Survey of School Leaders about Space for Transformation

The questionnaire was sent in early September to 35 school leaders in three different counties. All but two were secondary Heads and most in Wiltshire. Middle and Special schools were also represented.

This analysis is based on 24 returns received by mid-October, that are broadly representative of all of the above.

Comments include:

I am sure there are Heads and others who would find this beneficial personally

The programme could usefully apply to classroom
teachers who need an opportunity to refocus.

It is of value to all, but some will address this issue in their own way

I wish the project well; it certainly is needed.

Great idea!

Difficult to fund from school budgets…Hope it is successful. Lovely idea for Heads!

I think this is super! It is all very exciting and deserves to succeed.

I think it is an excellent idea.

It looks a really interesting idea.

The web-site looks great. I really liked it.

75% said that it is very important for school leaders periodically to review their commitment to personal and professional values (the remaining 25% saying that it is important).

75% reported that stress-related sickness had been an issue in their schools in the past three years. Of these, more than two-thirds said that the issue had been fairly costly whilst the other third said that it had been worse than that (costly or very costly).

After looking at the Space for Transformation leaflet, 65% said that they would personally value such an opportunity for space and spiritual refreshment with independent, non-judgemental support to address personal and professional issues.

With the key issues, (of which respondents could choose as many as they wished) the most popular was Removing obstacles to learning, chosen by 75%. Next, all with 58%, came Improving work-life balance, Articulating aims and vision and Managing key team relationships, closely followed with 54% by Promoting and evaluating creativity. The other issues: Enabling colleagues to internalise goals; Cherishing self and all individuals; Handling ‘difficult conversations’; Dealing with confrontation and its aftermath; Achieving clarity of purpose; Turning discipline & behaviour around were all chosen by at least 33%.

88% said that they thought ‘Space for Transformation’ could be helpful or very helpful to leaders in education at all levels (12% saying it could be fairly helpful).

On timings, five people marked more than one option. Of all the options chosen, 37% were for two weekdays in term time; 13% for weekends in term time; 37% for a mixture of weekday and weekend in term time and 13% for holiday time.

On the costs, 71% said that £345 was either good value (17%) or about right (54%); 25% said too high and 4% didn’t know.
